During the Battle of Neuve Chapelle which was fought between 10^th-12^th March 1915, 3^rd Division were holding the line further north at Spanbroekmolen. Believing that the Germans were sending troops from the Ypres area to reinforce around Neuve Chapelle, British GHQ ordered 7 Brigade to attack to stop further transfers.  At 2.30pm on 12^th March the attack went in but the bombardment had been inadequate and the wire not cut.  The attack foundered and both 3^rd Worcestershire and 1^st Wiltshire, the two attacking battalions, lost heavily with nothing to show for their sacrificial efforts.
